Buying a minivan, car or SUV should be an exciting event considering it may be one of the biggest investments that you will make. And while many dealerships might lure you in with sales, searching for the perfect handicap accessible vehicle that fits your needs is worth researching and waiting for if it isn’t in stock.
Selecting the wrong dealership can make your entire experience unpleasant, especially for someone who is dealing a disability. Jumping into an offer too quickly and not asking the right questions can also cause regrets. So consider all your options, ask the right questions, and take your time when searching for a mobility dealership. All NMEDA dealers are quality assurance program accredited and held to the highest industry standards. QAP dealers are a great place to start.
Things to Consider
Below is a helpful checklist of questions to ask when searching for a mobility dealer who fits your needs:
- How long have you been in business? How many conversions do you perform a year? (eight to ten are not enough!)
- Are previous customers happy? Ask for a contact list of people who had similar needs and call them. Read online reviews about customer service.
- Do you offer financing? Many automobile manufactures offer rebate programs toward the purchase of adaptive equipment.
- Do you offer on-site repairs for wheelchair vans, adaptive cars or SUVs?
- Do you offer rentals or lease handicap vans? You may need to lease a van for a short term. Look for easy termination.
- Do you offer 24-hour emergency service? NMEDA has a Quality Assurance Program (QAP) that is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the adaptive mobility industry. All NMEDA dealers provide 24-hour emergency service.
- Do you take trade-ins? If you already own a vehicle, that will make it easier.
- What is the warranty like? (They can range from 3-year 36,000 miles to 5-year 60,000 miles.)
- Do your technicians attend classes yearly for the latest technology?
- What is the vehicle maintenance schedule like?
- Do you offer a buy-back plan?
