Coping with a New Disability
Adjusting to a new lifestyle can take a toll on an individual physically and emotionally. Living with a disability can present challenges for everyone involved such as family, caregivers and friends. The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) recommends the following helpful tips to manage a new disability.
1.) Allow yourself time to come to terms with your new situation. It is completely normal and natural to feel frustrated, angry, and resentful when you are presented with mobility challenges that were previously second nature. If you are having trouble coping on your own, counseling is a great option. There are many hospitals and social service agencies that provide specialized channels for the newly disabled. Ask your caregiver, physician, or family for assistance in locating one.
2.) You may find yourself frustrated with how long it takes to receive the help you need from government institutions. If you decide to contact government and disability agencies for help, make sure to document your interactions.
3.) The most important tip NMEDA can offer is to not allow your disability to define you. Allow yourself time to adapt and give yourself the opportunity to move forward with a positive outlook ahead. www.nmeda.flywheelsites.com provides information on social activities and more under the articles tab so that you can connect with others going through similar challenges.
