38th Annual Veterans Wheelchair Games Commence
Military service veterans who use wheelchairs don’t just watch sports – they’re part of the action! They enjoy competitive events including basketball, softball, swimming, cycling, lifting, trap shooting, and more. These sports and others are offered at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world, which kicked off Monday and continues through Saturday, August 4, 2018 in Orlando, Florida.
This annual multi-event sports and rehabilitation program for military service veterans who use wheelchairs due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems, attracts more than 500 athletes each year and is presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA).
NMEDA is honored to be a Silver Level sponsor of this year’s 38th annual event and had the pleasure of welcoming attendees via video and also attending the opening day’s events. Check out our welcome video here.
While past Games have produced national and world-class champions, the Games also provide opportunities for newly-disabled veterans to gain new skills and be exposed to other wheelchair athletes.
Typically, one quarter of the competitors have never participated in any type of organized wheelchair sports competition. Athletes compete against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience, or age.
