Seniors: Is There a CarFit Event in Your Area?
Older drivers are more likely to wear their seatbelts and less likely to speed or drink and drive, according to car-fit.org. However, according to a survey taken by the organization, at least 1 in 10 seniors are seated too close to the steering wheel, at least 4 do not have line of sight at least 3-inches over the steering wheel, and almost 3 have at least one critical safety issue that needs addressing. All are safety issues.
CarFit can help – for free. It is an educational program created by the American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA (American Automobile Association), AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
The objective of the CarFit program is to help older drivers by hosting program events designed to provide a quick but comprehensive check of how well you and your vehicle work together.
It highlights actions you can take to improve the fit and promote conversations about driver safety and community mobility.
CarFit events are held throughout the country, where a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A trained professional asks simple questions and completes a 12-point checklist. A CarFit check takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
You leave with recommended car adjustments and adaptations, a list of resources in your area and greater peace of mind.
Individuals wishing to take part in a CarFit Checkup can click here and look at the calendar of upcoming events. (CarFit checks are not available in all areas.)
An online CarFit brochure discusses individual adjustments and simple adaptive devices to find your best person-to-vehicle fit. Download a PDF document of the latest CarFit brochure here.
