Get Ready for National Mobility Awareness Month
Each May, we kick off National Mobility Awareness Month (NMAM). Driven by the theme “Life Moving Forward,” NMEDA members and our industry partners team up to organize an international campaign that works to highlight and celebrate the ways in which people living with disabilities persevere and triumph over their physical challenges while bringing attention to the many life-changing mobility solutions available to make independence more accessible. We also work together to offer people like you the chance to win an amazing prize during the Local Hero Contest—a brand new wheelchair accessible vehicle customized to your needs.
Last year, we were able to award four mobility vehicles to Local Heroes across the country, and the buzz built up around NMAM drove 21 more vehicles to be donated to deserving families! We’re hoping to make an even bigger impact with our 2015 campaign and want you to get involved.
Who is a Local Hero?
Local Heroes can be defined as people who volunteer, educate, advocate, achieve, and persevere. Each year, we invite those living life without limits despite disabilities to share their stories of perseverance and strength. From individuals, veterans or seniors with disabilities to their families and caregivers, every person striving to lead an active, fulfilling and independent life can be considered a Local Hero and be a part of the annual contest.
How can I or someone I care for enter?
The story submission period for NMAM 2015 will kick off on April 15 and remain open through May 31. Just head over to MobilityAwarenessMonth.com to learn even more about this amazing opportunity and get started. Whether you’re submitting your own story, or entering on behalf of a loved one, all you need to get involved is a 400-word story and a picture or a two-minute video (or less) telling us what makes you or your loved one a Local Hero.
And now there are more ways than ever to climb your way to victory. Stop by your local NMEDA Dealer for a Quality Needs Assessment to gain 1,000 points when you enter or call your local dealer for their unique dealer code and earn 10 points at the time of submission.
The voting period for Local Hero stories will begin May 1 and run through May 31, so you’ll have one month to share your story and ask friends, family and your community for their support on this journey. Mark your calendars for this incredible opportunity and be a part of National Mobility Awareness Month.
