National Mobility Awareness Month is observed every May and was established by NMEDA in 2012. It is a nationwide campaign that promotes awareness, education, and support for people with disabilities, seniors, and veterans who want to live active, independent lives. What is a NMEDA QAP accredited dealer?
QAP stands for Quality Assurance Program, NMEDA’s nationally recognized accreditation for mobility equipment dealers. QAP dealers employ certified technicians, follow documented safety standards, and undergo an independent audit at least once per year to ensure compliance with federal and industry guidelines. It is the highest standard in the adaptive mobility industry.
How do I know if I need adaptive mobility equipment?
If a physical disability or condition makes it difficult or impossible for you to operate a standard vehicle or ride comfortably, you may benefit from adaptive equipment. The best way to find out is to schedule an evaluation with a NMEDA QAP-certified dealer or a certified driver rehabilitation specialist (CDRS). They can assess your needs and recommend the right solution.
Will my insurance cover adaptive vehicle modifications?
Coverage varies by plan and provider. Some private health insurance plans and Medicaid waiver programs cover certain types of adaptive equipment. Veterans may be eligible for VA grants. There are also manufacturer rebate programs and nonprofit grants that can help. A NMEDA dealer can help you understand which options apply to your specific situation.
Does getting my vehicle converted void my warranty?
Not necessarily. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your vehicle warranty simply because aftermarket parts or modifications have been added, unless the modification directly caused the problem being claimed. NMEDA QAP-certified dealers follow proper installation protocols to minimize any warranty concerns. Always discuss warranty questions with both your dealer and your vehicle manufacturer.
How long does the modification process take?
The timeline varies based on the type and complexity of the modification. Some simpler adaptations can be completed in a day or two. More complex vehicle conversions, like a full wheelchair accessible van, may take several weeks depending on parts availability and scheduling. Your NMEDA dealer can give you a more specific estimate once your needs have been assessed.
What is a driving evaluation and do I need one?
A driving evaluation is an assessment conducted by a certified driver rehabilitation specialist (CDRS) to determine whether you can safely operate a vehicle and what adaptive equipment you may need. It typically includes a clinical assessment and an on-road evaluation. While not always required, a driving evaluation is strongly recommended before pursuing vehicle modifications, particularly for individuals with significant physical or cognitive changes.
